Ross has dedicated 35 years of service to the New Zealand Police. Early in his career, he quickly recognized his passion for investigations, leading him to join the Combined Investigation Unit, where he developed a strong foundation in investigative work. This experience paved the way for his entry into the Criminal Investigation Branch, where he qualified as a Detective in 2002.

Throughout his career, Ross has gained extensive expertise across a wide range of investigations, earning promotions to Detective Sergeant and later Detective Senior Sergeant. He has handled numerous complex cases, including high-profile homicides and major incidents that attracted significant community and media attention.
